About Us
Urban Community Development Centre (UCDC) is a community organization working with children, women, senior citizens and youth. The mission of our centre is to improve the quality of life, especially of people in slums, ‘bastis’ and the less privileged in society.
It is a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and is the project of the Society for Community Development in India, a Registered Public Trust (Society Reg. No. BOM 58/71, GBBSD Public Trust Reg. No. F2189) having its office at Bandra, Mumbai. The Centre came into existence on February 19, 1971, and has completed more than 50 years of service to the people, especially the slum dwellers and migrants, mainly in and around Bandra.
As an agency working towards making ‘inroads into poverty’, that is exactly what UCDC has been doing – spreading light, giving hope towards better living despite trying circumstances. Besides providing daycare to the children of domestic workers, the centre also provides medical care in the form of camps; programmes which are both educational and entertaining to the parents and employed youth working as domestics in homes, and income-generating courses targeting especially school drop-outs with the aim of making them self-sufficient.
UCDC has metamorphosed into a center to serve the society at large. The number of facilities have grown, particularly in the medical field. The fact that doctors who have advanced specialization in their field of medicine have joined the fraternity should instill confidence in the patients seeking medical diagnosis at nominal costs. Like regular clinics we make use of disposable stuff and thorough maintenance of equipment is at the top of our list of priorities. Being a charitable organization, the charges at our medical clinics are deliberately kept low, sufficient to meet the expenditure. In addition to this, financially weaker patients are treated at a concessional rate.
We organize from time to time talks on various topics for various categories of people by experts to conscientise them about their rights and obligations. The prime objective is to improve the quality of their life and ensure they are not exploited by anybody.
The old building on 14th Road was demolished as it was old and in dilapidated condition. A new building is constructed by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) on the same plot of land, and the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th floors are exclusively given to UCDC to re-establish and carry out its various activities and programmes. The floors have to be furnished to cater to various medical, educational and social/empowerment programmes and activities, and the offices.
to the people, especially the slum dwellers and migrants.
MISSION
We commit ourselves to improving the quality of life, especially of the people living in slums and of migrants through a process of Empowerment.
We achieve this by conscientizing them to create self- identity and dignity through non-formal education, spiritual care, and helping them to obtain various legal documents as citizens. Also, we commit ourselves to promote their wellbeing by providing preventive and curative health care facilities, by networking with like-minded NGOs, NPOs and Associations.
VISION
Urged by God’s love.
Empowering and enhancing the lives of the migrants and the marginalized.
