UCDC conducts an annual Summer Camp for the children from the ‘bastis’ and the children of migrants every year belonging to the age group of 5 to 14 years. The camp is designed to keep the children gainfully occupied during the summer vacation. We usually cater to a maximum of 70 students as our infrastructure and other facilities do not permit a larger number. We plan various activities and personality development programmes to keep them fruitfully occupied. In addition, they are also provided with a sumptuous and nourishing meal.
This year, however, we could only accommodate our children from the various departments due to paucity of space at SVD House where we are presently housed.
Ms. Bushra Basawab and Ms. Shreya Tiwari, are the two students from SNDT University, doing their Early Child Care and Education degree course, who took charge of the summer camp as part of their their practical and field experience internship.
They worked with children of our Creche, Balwadi, Jr. and Sr. KGs and the older group from 1st to 4th standards. Thus they gained experience working with all the age groups. With the older children they conducted craft activities, played various games and also taught them dance. Initially they found it difficult to handle the older children, but as the days progressed, they were quite comfortable with them and also enjoyed their interaction with them.
Staff members, Philo and Savita, also engaged children of the Jr. and Sr. KG and the Balwadi with games, dance and craft activities while the two students were busy with the older children.
The two internship students did a wonderful job preparing all the children for the performance on the final day. They said that they found the atmosphere here very homely and loving and that the children blossomed in this caring environment. Their internship at the Centre has been a most memorable and rewarding one for them.
